Twelve reasons
to cross the river.

The Women Who Didn't Ask Permission

London has a remarkable collection of women who were told what they couldn't do.

Fortunately, not all of them listened.

Some became writers. Others scientists, artists, activists, and queens. One changed the way people dressed. Another helped change the way people worked. And a few made such an impression that the city is still arguing about how to remember them.

You'll find their traces in some rather unexpected places.

A quiet square in Bloomsbury. A shop on King's Road with a very unusual clock. A former factory in East London. A hospital garden beside the Thames.

Not exactly the places you'd expect to find extraordinary stories.

But that's London.

A city where a perfectly ordinary-looking building might have witnessed an argument that changed history. Where a small plaque can tell you more than an entire museum gallery. And where some of the most interesting women never made it onto the postcards.

There's Mary Wollstonecraft, who had strong opinions about what women deserved. Virginia Woolf, whose words would travel far beyond the rooms where she wrote them. Mary Seacole, who found her own way to do work that mattered.

Then there's Vivienne Westwood.

Because naturally, not every revolution needs to happen in a library.

These women didn't all agree with one another. They lived in different centuries, came from different backgrounds, and wanted very different things.

That's what makes their stories worth finding.

They weren't trying to become inspirational quotes.

They were living their lives, making decisions, making mistakes, and occasionally making an enormous amount of trouble.

London has kept a few clues to where it all happened.

Twelve of them are waiting to be discovered.

Take the Tube. Get off somewhere unexpected. Walk a little further than you planned.

You never know whose story might be around the next corner.

Choose one.

You don't need to know what happens before you go. You only need somewhere worth walking toward.

We don't give you an itinerary.
We give you a reason to go.

Before you go.

Read the access note for the portal you choose. Some places are further out than they look on the map, and some are private or working places you only see from outside.

THREE YEARS and STILL HERE depend on opening hours.
