Fifteen reasons
to look at the edge of the picture.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin Has a Few Things to Set Straight

There's a famous photograph from Dublin's 1916 Rising.

A man stands in front of British soldiers.

For years, most people looking at the picture never noticed the woman at the edge of the frame.

Which is an interesting place to begin a story about Dublin.

Because this city has quite a few women who ended up somewhere other than the center of the picture.

A hospital remembered by a man's name, although a woman made it possible. A bridge named after a labor organizer. An old hotel whose fading letters still remember a young woman who worked there before she became part of literary history.

And then there are the women who had absolutely no intention of staying quietly in the background.

Some smashed windows. Others boarded a train carrying things they weren't supposed to bring into the country.

A group of women once arrived at a famously male bathing spot and announced, with considerable confidence, that they would be swimming there too.

Dublin has always known how to make a point.

Sometimes with a speech. Sometimes with a protest. Occasionally with a very well-timed entrance.

But the city isn't all rebellion and argument.

There are ghost stories, old religious figures, a woman who spent twenty-three years painting orchids, and four bronze figures who have spent a very long time holding lamps outside a hotel.

You'll find their stories in parks, along the river, beside old buildings, and on streets where history rarely announces itself.

Fifteen places offer a different perspective on Dublin.

Not every account is straightforward. Not every legend is true. And some of the most interesting details are the ones people chose to leave out.

Dublin, fortunately, has always been rather good at talking.

It's worth hearing a few more of its women.

Choose one.

You don't need to know what happens before you go. You only need somewhere worth walking toward.
