Fifteen reasons
to look behind the facade.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Behind the Beautiful Facade

The Amalfi Coast is very good at making you forget what time it is.

There's the sea, of course. The houses clinging to cliffs. The lemons, the endless staircases, the little tables that somehow turn a quick coffee into an entire afternoon.

It's easy to fall in love with the view.

But there's quite a lot happening behind it.

A famous play was finished here, inspired by a real woman whose life was considerably more complicated than the character she inspired. A duchess disappeared, leaving behind a legend that people still tell centuries later. And somewhere in Ravello, a marble woman has been keeping historians guessing about her identity.

Then there are the women who carried baskets of lemons down those impossibly steep paths.

You might appreciate the stairs a little differently after meeting them.

Not every story on this coast is about romance and beautiful villas. Some are about work, ambition, faith, loss, and the peculiar ways people choose to remember things.

Others involve singing creatures on distant islands, a rather competitive devil, and a mountain with a hole in it.

The Amalfi Coast has never been short of imagination.

What makes these stories so interesting is how easily you could miss them.

A tower becomes part of the scenery. An old church is just another stop on a walking route. A face carved into stone becomes something you photograph without thinking to ask who she was.

And yet, each one has a story.

Fifteen of them are waiting along this coastline, from little seaside towns to villages high above the water.

Follow a few, and you might discover a side of Amalfi that never makes it onto the postcards.

The views will still be beautiful.

You'll just have a few more things to look at.

Choose one.

You don't need to know what happens before you go. You only need somewhere worth walking toward.
